Mission Statement
The primary purpose of a mission statement is to state, in a clear manner, why the company or organization exists.
Consider this: most mission statements are created by a few top individuals (like the board of directors), so there may not be a huge ticker-tape parade when the mission statement is rolled out for the employee. That is, for most people, the mission statement is simply a paragraph that rests on a plaque over in the corner.
The clever leader, however, will turn this around and ask what inspires the employee, based on what he or she interprets from the mission, and find out what parts of it the employee can truly relate to. This means asking questions like, “Does this mission statement coincide with your personal beliefs?” or “Which parts of the statement align most directly with your own values and beliefs?”
Remember, the goal here is to create buy-in at every level and to reduce misunderstanding. While the mission statement is not the most important tool when using this plan with your employees, it is critical that they understand why the company exists, what function the company provides for the client, and what aspects of the mission really hit home.
We will focus more on the process of meeting and maximizing the potential of your employees in upcoming articles. Clarifying the mission statement, however, will ensure that the reason your company exists aligns with your employees' understanding.
