A Better Way to Elect a Table Leader

For a fun and enjoyable way to elect a table leader, either for individual exercises or for a full or half day of training, try this technique.

Setup:

  • Assuming people are already seated at tables (regardless of size), ask everyone at each table to raise his or her right hand and point to the person he or she would like to be table leader.
  • Most people point to the most vocal or popular person, or at the very least to someone else, because they do not want the job themselves.
  • Next, have whoever "won" the most points or hands at that table stand up. In the event of a tie, re-vote by the same method. At this point, everyone believes the table leader has already been chosen and that those not standing are "in the clear."
  • Now, ask the standing person to raise his or her left hand and point to the person he or she really wants to be table leader at the respective table.
  • The recipient of the left-handed pointer is now the REAL table leader and you can get on with your day.

Purpose:

This is a great way to encourage a discussion on participation and getting involved with the seminar. It also may lead into discussions on how leaders are sometimes really chosen, and what truly makes a great leader.
