Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Resume
The Warning
I would encourage you not to underestimate me. In the five-and-a-half years since I graduated from one of the less-than-notable business schools in the U.S., I have worked my way up and through one major athletic wear corporation, three boutique
marketing and public relations firms in two vastly different industries, managed a whitewater adventure company, directed a nonprofit organization, and still took a year “sabbatical” to travel the world in between.
The Reality
Arguably, it’s created a slightly pieced-together resume, an assortment of experience. Inarguably, this array of experience is what continues to land me more of it. My point? Take the resume with a grain of salt. Don’t assume a “year off” equates to “slacker” or “lazy.” Five jobs in five years doesn’t necessarily make me noncommittal, but instead, desirous of more experience from talented people in a plethora of industries and situations. Sometimes the most applicable work experience can be found in our time away from the workplace.
As the corporate world continues to evolve, seek out those who have evolved with it and keep in mind that clever, creative, and irreplaceable are difficult traits to portray on white linen paper in 12-point font.
